It’s the end of week number two of living in Darius and Chivon’s dope den. Dawn is approaching, the Baltimore moon is being outshined by the morning light. I’ve crept into the city streets, making my usual trip to the guardrail post where my cash is hidden. Upon withdrawing money from the paper bag, I notice that the stack of bills feels thin. I come to the disheartening realization that I’m running out of cash. The day I’ve been avoiding is now upon me, it’s time to tally up my dough and see what’s left.

I put the bag in my pocket and sneak into the dope den where Darius and Chivon are sleeping off their highs. Now that I have an opportunity to be alone with my money, I stagger to the kitchen to count it. I wobble unsteadily to the table, stumbling clumsily to the chair. I’m severely dizzy because I’ve been shooting speedballs, a deadly combination of heroin and cocaine. But I’ve been taking the risk because the jolt of the coke allows me to remain cognizant enough to enjoy massive amounts of dope without nodding off.

This binge hasn’t left me without unfortunate side effects. I’ve been grinding my teeth and twitching nervously for two weeks. The only time I’ve gotten a semblance of rest is when my eyes forcibly shut, due to exhaustion. And so, as I dump my bag of cash on the table, the stress on my body takes its toll.

My consciousness slowly abandons me.

I’m carried into a dreamlike state.
